In September, Cindy and I managed to squeeze in one — that’s one — camping trip with some friends. We spent a couple of days at one of our favorite spots, Billy Creek in southeastern Oklahoma. There’s no electrical hook-ups and not much for kids to do, so we usually get the whole campground to ourselves. And the dogs love it. I think they see us peeing on trees as some kind of bonding experience.
It was the second time our dog Hooper had been to Billy Creek, but it was his first trail hike. We did a six-mile trail (and another couple of miles of “random” hiking on and off while hiking the real trail…if you get my meaning).
The little mutt was like a hiking machine, his little legs pumping his stocky body up and down the paths, down dirt and gravel roads, over rocks and fallen trees, all the while pulling Cindy along. (Her left arm is now a half-inch longer than her right.) He was quite the sled dog. Whenever we came to a moving waterway we stopped and let the dogs jump in and cool off.
We were a little worried that he would overheat or something. He’s got a thick, wiry coat better suited to cooler climates. It helped that it was September and wasn’t unbearably hot.
So, I was going through some pictures last week and found this little clip from the trail of our friend Traci doing her best to keep our dog hydrated.
It’s probably more fun for us to watch, but I though I’d put it out here anyway. What the hell.
Enjoy.

Can’t lose with cute pics and videos of dogs. I just love Hooper. Glad he gets to go camping with you too. He seems to think it’s way fun!
