Garage/Yard Sale Weekend

One of my favorite garage sale moments happened a few years ago when Todd was getting rid of everything he owned in preparation for his move to Japan.

A frumpy woman in a flowery shirt pulled a $5.00 metal wine rack off a shelf, looked at the price tag, and turned to Todd. “How much will you take for this?” she asked.

Keep in mind that the rack is marked $5.00! A 50% discount would be $2.50, and most people would consider that a significant discount and a great bargain. But Todd, who just wanted to get rid of the stuff, said “One dollar.”

Okay, let’s stop right there for a minute. She had picked the wine rack up, looked at it, and asked about the price. You would think she was interested in buying it, wouldn’t you? That’s what I thought.

Instead, she crinkled up her nose at the $1.00 offer, let out a disappointed “hmm” sound and sigh, and put the wine rack back. No way in hell she was going to pay $1.00 for that!

It was like something out of The Simpsons.

Cindy and I have had to suffer through our own tortured weekends of people who haggle over nickels and dimes. And that’s what we’ll be doing this weekend.

Still, you get to clear out a lot of the clutter that builds up and make a few bucks, so it’s not all bad. Whatever is left takes a trip to Goodwill anyway, so if you can charge people to haul some of it away for you, all the better. It’s that much less you have to cart off at the end of the day. But it’s the people that drive me crazy.

Thankfully, we’re only doing this for two days (Friday and Saturday), and going out to the Tulsa State Fair in the evenings.

So there is that.

Tom and I had a little garage sale right before we moved to georgia. I found myself petrified. I hid inside the kitchen and made Tom conduct the whole thing. What was my problem? I have no idea.

BTW, I like the new color scheme here!

I think if I had to do that over again, I’d be tempted to have everything just be “Name Your Price, But Be Reasonable” and if they said,”So, I could take this for a penny?” I could say, “Yeah, if you want to be a dick about it.” There’s no reasoning with those people, tho.

Oh, garage sales are the worst. I’m not sure they are worth the torture…..
